The Value of Animals

A filmic contemplation on animal ethics

„We are waging a war –  a war of society against animals.“ A drastic, yet appropriate statement, taking into account that in Germany alone 746 million livestock are slaughtered each year.

Dr. Rainer Hagencord, catholic theologist, philosopher and biologist at the Institute of Theological Zoology in Münster, has been dealing with the relationship between humans and our animals – especially livestock – for several years now. Dr. Hagencord will not hesitate to take his thoughts one step further, describing mass husbandry as the most devastating and destructive weapon in this war on animals.

Karl Ludwig Schweisfurth, master butcher and former „meat-baron“, made a radical change when he sold his meat factory HERTA WURST and converted his property in Glonn, Munich, to organic agriculture and animal husbandry. He introduced a new way of processing meat, where the animals – our fellow creatures - are treated with the utmost reverence. A reverence that is evident in the animals’ respectful killing and the natural, as well as chemical-free processing of the meat products.

Bertram Verhaag is not the type to raise the admonishing finger. He prefers to build bridges between the parties that have formed over the discussion of meat consumption. With insightful images, he manages to stir our thoughts, allowing us to reflect on ourselves and on our relationship to livestock, without attempting to inflict a bad conscience.
