Die traurige Geschichte von den glücklichen Kühen

The Sad Story of the Happy Cows

a film by Bertram Verhaag

15 min

Braunvieh cows, native to the Bavarian region of Allgäu, are not complete without a pair of horns. Farmers have always seen good horns as a sign of health, vitality and productivity – that’s why they historically bred their cows with shapely horns in mind. It was only with the introduction of non-tethering cowsheds that de-horning - seen as a means to reduce the risk of injury - became common practice. After all, a cow with no horns doesn’t need as much space. That also saves building costs. De-horning is, therefore, a response to industrial farming practices which aim to pack as many animals into as tight a space as possible. The overbred animals, pumped full of drugs and with limited room to move, become stressed and aggressive. We present an alternative approach.
